The Conseil des arts de Montréal and Space for Life are pleased to announce that visual artist Hua Jin is the first recipient of the Artist Residency | Space for Life at the Planetarium.

About the artist

Born in China and based in Montréal, Hua Jin has spent several years developing an arts practice focused on natural phenomena, invisible forces and the bonds between living beings and their environment. Her work has been exhibited in Canada and internationally and is featured in the collections of the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts, the Canada Council Art Bank and the Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai.

About the proposed project

For this residency, the artist will produce Comme là-haut, ainsi dans nous (As Above, So Within), an installation inspired by the love story between author and science documentary producer Ann Druyan and astronomer Carl Sagan, as well as by recordings sent to space aboard the Voyager space probes.

The work will take the form of a suspended installation that will sway in the breeze created by visitors passing by. It will create a living work that breathes, because the heart of love still beats, the music still resonates, the water still flows and the universe echoes. With this proposal, Hua will continue to explore an approach based on observing nature and reflecting on the invisible bonds that shape our existence.

This first residency marks the beginning of the partnership between CAM and Espace pour la vie announced last September. Positioned at the crossroads of art, science and nature, this initiative offers Montréal artists the opportunity to venture into new creative territory in dialogue with Space for Life’s exceptional expertise and environments.

We extend our warmest congratulations to Hua Jin and look forward to seeing how this project takes shape during her residency at the Planetarium.
