Montreal, March 25, 2026 – The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) and the Conseil des arts de Montréal are pleased to announce that Chloë Cheuk is the winner of the 2026 Impressions residency. Each year, this eight-week residency invites a visual artist from one of Montreal’s cultural communities to carry out a research-creation project at the Museum by bringing a unique and original perspective to its collection.
In her artistic practice, Chloë Cheuk explores the emotional tension and structural dynamics between humans, objects, and institutional systems using video as well as kinetic and conceptual installations. Her creative process is rooted in autobiography, observation, and iterative research-creation. Each work is conceived as an experiment rather than a form of representation, revealing both the potential and limitations of systems, materials, and human interaction.
During her MMFA residency, the Montreal-based Hong Kong artist Chloë Cheuk will explore the influence of institutional protocols on the public’s interactions, proximity, and desire within the Museum’s spaces. Rather than viewing the works in the MMFA’s collection as mere objects, she will approach the Museum as an environment that is experienced.
Her research project will focus particularly on the ways in which desire, restraint, and proximity are negotiated when the public is not allowed to touch the works and, especially, how these factors shape the public’s embodied and affective experiences.
“Using sculpture, installation, video and photography, Chloë Cheuk creates refined assemblages that distill human emotions and behaviours with great sensitivity. Her unique approach, at once delicate and deeply reflective, reveals an artistic vision that seeks to foster a rich dialogue between her works and the public. The CAM is proud to support Chloë in her exploration of alternative perspectives on the museum experience,” said Nathalie Maillé, Executive Director of the Conseil des arts de Montréal.
“We are thrilled to welcome Chloë Cheuk as the laureate of the Impressions Residency at the MMFA. Deeply attuned to perception, presence, and the quiet intensities of encounter, Cheuk’s project explores how the Museum shapes relationships between artworks, spaces, and those who move among them—opening new possibilities for the Museum to listen, learn, and deepen its understanding of the communities we serve.” added Mary-Dailey Desmarais, Zhao-Ionescu Chief Curator of the MMFA.
