MONTRÉAL, November 21, 2025 – The Conseil des arts de Montréal is pleased to announce that Laura Kamugisha is the winner of the 12th edition of the Regard sur Montréal film residency. Valued at $75,000, the residency will enable her to make her short documentary film Cueilli sous le bananier.
This intimate film explores motherhood as experienced in two cultures. Born to a Congolese father and a Rwandan mother, Laura arrived in Canada as a political refugee. In her film, she looks at her personal experience of becoming a mother in Montréal, weaving a dialogue between memory, exile and transmission. Through everyday acts and women’s voices, she paints a sensitive portrait of a world where giving life also means giving a story.
Drawing on both realism and fantasy, her work questions the traces left by history and the grey areas in the diasporic experience.
This program is a collaboration of the Conseil des arts de Montréal, the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC) and the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), in partnership with Les Films de l’Autre and RIDM.
