Message from Nathalie Maillé, Executive Director

As 2019 draws to a close, I’d like to send you my best wishes for 2020 and recap the past year’s successes.

Ensuring recognition for all the voices that make up our city continues to be an imperative for us, and the growing consciousness confirms the approaches we’re taking and the choices we’ve made. The budget increase granted to the Conseil by the Plante-Dorais administration has allowed us to make meaningful progress on our strategic priorities. We are very grateful for this gesture of recognition toward the arts community and its artists.

Over the past year, we made strides with several initiatives relating to our priorities: we launched Cultivart, our new Indigenous internships and mentorships; we established new partnerships for two residencies for Indigenous artists and curators, and we expanded the démART-Mtl program to double its paid internships. Two new residencies for culturally diverse artists were also created: Je me vois à l’écran for emerging film artists from Afro-descendant communities, and Voi.e.s.x théâtrales, for culturally diverse playwrights. In addition, we recently launched the Jovette-Marchessault Award for theatre artists identifying as women.

We introduced a support program to help fund works by four organizations or collectives in the boroughs of Montréal-Nord, Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, St-Laurent and Verdun, and over the last few months the first Art & AI residency took place. Not to mention our national artsvest program, created by Business/Arts, which holds investments from the Rossy Foundation, Canadian Heritage and the Conseil to be channelled into small to mid-size cultural organizations.

All this work would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the Conseil’s great team. Everyone gave 100% throughout this year marked by development and change. The dedication and passion of our employees never cease to amaze me. A huge thank you also to our Board members, who are always committed and present and whose valuable advice guided our actions during 2019. Many thanks as well to our evaluation committee members for giving freely of their precious time and for their much appreciated expertise, openness and availability.

To all the artists, creators, organizations, collectives and cultural workers who make our city so remarkable, you are the reason we exist and you continue to make us very proud.

Happy Holidays to everyone!
