Compagnie Virginie Brunelle Receives the 2016-2017 “Public’s Choice” Award from the Conseil des arts de Montréal en tournée

Montréal, January 18, 2018 – Compagnie Virginie Brunelle was awarded the coveted “Public’s Choice” title for the Conseil des arts de Montréal en tournée’s 2016-2017 season today for its dance show Foutrement. The performance received the greatest number of votes from the competition’s roughly 2,500 participants. To commemorate the achievement, a work by artist Colleen Wolstenholme called Untitled from the series Shifty Packets was given to Virginie Brunelle, the company’s Executive and Artistic Director. Foutrement explores the infidelity of men and women at the mercy of temptation and primal instincts. Three dancers, in love, ripped apart, wounded and betrayed, move with wracked bodies, sagging under the weight of Love’s disillusionment.

Compagnie Virginie Brunelle was founded in Montréal in January 2009. From the start, Virginie Brunelle has been its Artistic and Executive Director. The company’s productions have been presented on local, national and international stages in over 50 cities across 10 countries. Focusing on authenticity and humanity in the themes she explores as well as in the choice of performers, Virginie hopes to create a close bond with her audience members, stirring them with singular and powerful pieces. Her work features sensitive but raw performances, cinematic tableaux and a vocabulary that seeks to deconstruct traditional codes, using staccato rhythms and coarse movements, constantly alternating between tension and release. The company’s repertoire now includes five works: Les cuisses à l’écart du cœur (2009), Foutrement (2010), Complexe des genres (2011), PLOMB (2013) and À la douleur que j’ai (2016).
