“I like not understanding. Basically, I like putting myself in situations where I don’t fully understand all the aspects, where I feel out of my comfort zone. It makes me dig deep, reflect, read, discover. I like the idea of keeping busy to keep my balance.”

Since she graduated from the Conservatoire d’art dramatique de Montréal in 1999, Catherine Vidal has spent the past ten years directing stage productions. Masterful and convincing, her works shift easily between registers and give actors great latitude in interpreting the text, making her one of the most important directors of her generation and a stand-out in the current theatre landscape. In 2009, her adaptation of Agota Kristof’s Le Grand Cahier (“The Notebook”) gave audiences a first taste of her vast and vivid language, which explores and expands the boundaries of literature. Then came her striking productions of contemporary plays like David Harrower’s Des couteaux dans les poules (“Knives in Hens“) (2013), Étienne Lepage’s Robin et Marion (2012) and Thomas Bernhard’s Avant la retraite (“Eve of Retirement”) (2014). Her approach to repertory works is to defy conventions while bringing to bear the true spirit of each play, as she did for Dostoevsky’s L’Idiot (“The Idiot”), co-adapting the novel with Étienne Lepage in 2018, and for Carlo Goldoni’s classic comedy Les Amoureux (“The Lovers”).
