On behalf of all members of the Conseil des arts de Montréal, I want to send you a message of hope today. Despite all the uncertainty our families, organizations, and communities have been facing over the past two months, we must show solidarity and a willingness to rethink how we operate in all sectors, and the arts and culture is no exception.

We have already seen many organizations demonstrate flexibility, quickly adopting solutions to make works available to audiences. Such solutions are temporary, and much thought is going into re-examining the cultural landscape to both preserve current forms of expression while also fostering the emergence of new ones. This process cannot happen without input from all stakeholders of Montréal society and other important allies in various levels of government. We at the Conseil must listen to the arts community in order to take part in this thought process and provide effective guidance for the community during the months-long process of reopening arts venues. It is our duty to remind people that arts and culture have the power to transform individual lives and improve how we live together, especially in such an important cultural centre as Montréal. It will be a long road, but all Conseil’s members and staff will be working with companies and collectives to build it. We must show empathy for each other, unity, and solidarity.
