The Conseil des arts de Montréal salutes Joseph Rouleau, Quebec opera pioneer

Montreal, July 16, 2019 – The Conseil des arts de Montréal was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of opera great and engaged citizen Joseph Rouleau. A world-renowned classical singer, he made a huge contribution to the national and international music scenes. The Conseil’s Chairman, Jan-Fryderyk Pleszczynski, and Executive Director Nathalie Maillé join with the music community and all Montrealers in offering sincere condolences to Mr. Rouleau’s family and friends.

“Joseph Rouleau played a unique part in forging Quebec’s international presence,” noted Ms. Maillé. “Well aware of the importance of art and culture, he was a tireless champion and advocate for young talent. The entire Conseil team salutes this professor and pillar of opera, who built his reputation on the world’s leading opera stages. Mr. Rouleau’s work and engagement made him a valuable ambassador for opera whose impact continues to resonate around the world.”

Chairman of Jeunesses Musicales Canada from 1989 to 2014 and Honorary President until his death, Joseph Rouleau was co-founder of the Mouvement d’action pour l’art lyrique du Québec, which gave rise to institutions such as the Opéra de Montréal, the Opéra de Québec and the Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal. True to his commitment to support emerging musicians, in particular young opera singers, Mr. Rouleau also co-founded the Montreal International Music Competition (CMIM). Recognized for its involvement and quality performances, the CMIM was a finalist in the 34th Grand Prix du Conseil des arts de Montréal.
