Hua Jin: Winner of the Conseil des arts de Montréal’s first-ever Cultural Diversity in Visual Arts Award

Congratulations to Hua Jin, winner of the first-ever Cultural Diversity in Visual Arts Award!

Hua Jin

The Conseil des arts de Montréal has joined forces with the City of the Montreal and the Contemporary Art Galleries Association (AGAC) to recognize the excellence of Montreal’s visual artists. This year’s Cultural Diversity in Visual Arts Award salutes the work and talent of Hua Jin, whose photo and video art captures transience – how places are altered by memories, how family imprints on material things, and how beauty is affected by the passage of time. The jury was particularly impressed by Jin’s artistic process, which creates a rich dialogue between Canada and China and guarantees her a strong presence on the national and international art scenes.

Accompanied by a purse of $7,500, this award also provides the winner with an opportunity to participate in the 2020-2021 season of the touring program Conseil des arts de Montréal en tournée and to gain visibility throughout the Montreal area. This new award reflects the Conseil’s commitment to inclusion in the arts, which it has articulated as a key strategic priority.

The Coup de cœur du jury was awarded to Marie-José Gustave, whose weaving technique, combining visual arts and fine crafts, attests to her compelling artistry. Marie-José will have an opportunity to exhibit her work in the mezzanine of the Maison du Conseil in 2019-2020.
