Grand opening of Wilder Espace Danse – An Agora de la Danse premiere

From February 22 to February 25, 2017

1435 Rue de Bleury

The inauguration of Wilder Espace Danse, located at the corner of de Bleury and Sainte-Catherine in Montreal’s entertainment district, is a major event, if not an historical milestone for choreographic arts. The long-awaited project, which saved the Wilder building from demolition picks, finally came into being in December of last year. The centre then welcomed its first residents, the members of Tangente and Agora de la danse, followed by l'École de danse contemporaine de Montréal and Les Grands Ballets canadiens de Montréal, four leading institutions, thus becoming a truly unique nexus for dance dissemination, creation and training in Québec.

To mark the occasion, l’Agora’s production of Animal triste will be presented at the Wilder from February 22ndto the 25th. Performed by dancers Marc Boivin, James Gnam, Briana Lombardo and Riley Sims, the work is an illustration of the human condition in all its complexity. I look forward to discovering this new promising venue, while also seeing an original work dreamt up by talented choreographer Mélanie Demers.

Mercurial George - Dana Michel

From February 28 to March 3, 2017

1345 avenue Lalonde

In my view, Usine C is one of Montreal’s top venues for high quality programming. Rarely have I left Usine C feeling I had wasted an evening. Whether I liked the production or not, I invariably felt enriched by the experience. Which is why, I plan to attend the latest production of an all-time favourite of mine, Montreal choreographer Dana Michel, who will be performing there from February 28thto March 3rd. In recent years, this unique, marginal artist has gained international recognition, increasingly garnering praise for her work. She has now become a key figure in the world of dance. As the saying goes, no one is ever a prophet in his own land; so let’s not miss this opportunity to see her in a local performance of Mercurial George, a work in which movement, body language and theatre are entwined and creatively deployed.

La Sala Rossa and Avec pas d'casque

February 22, 2017

4848 boul. St-Laurent

I have been so many times to La Sala Rossa on Saint-Laurent boulevard, and yet not often enough to take in everything that goes on there throughout the year. Both a restaurant and a lively performance venue, La Sala Rossa has for years persevered in its endeavour to showcase underground musical artists. On February 22ndat 7 p.m., I plan to be there for Effets spéciaux by the Montreal folk group Avec pas d'casque. Stéphane Lafleur and his band of three are hugely talented and their latest album has caught my ear. With its intimate atmosphere, La Sala Rossa is sure to be a perfect setting for this foursome, allowing the public to savour the subtleties of its lyrics and musical interpretation.
