Grande Bibliothèque

475, boulevard de Maisonneuve Est

Since opening seven years ago in the heart of the Quartier Latin, the Grande Bibliothèque has been one of the busiest libraries in French-speaking North America. To say that I’m a die-hard fan will not surprise anyone! How can one not be delighted with this outstanding success? This luminous, accessible and welcoming institution holds over 4 million documents, including more than one million books. In addition to this near-endless selection, there are also CDs, DVDs, cassettes, magazines and newspapers. Pull up a chair in this calm environment, escape life’s pressures within the pages of a novel or periodical… what a pleasure! Everyone—children, business people, immigrants—can feel at home here, and borrow material to satisfy their thirst for new discoveries and increase their knowledge—on whatever subject. A total success!

Théâtre La Roulotte

Theatre—what a magical experience! And what could be more enjoyable than attending a show with the family, free of charge, in a park during the summer? As it has done every year since 1953, when it was founded by Paul Buissonneau, the Théâtre de la Roulotte will present another dramatic work, this time based on the “Hansel and Gretel” tale, directed by Claude Dauphinais, from June 26 to August 25. I love the bold concept of this travelling theatre of no fixed abode, a true school for actors who have gone on to find fame, which revisits the classic tales, moving from place to place with its inventive format. It is also a meeting place for people of the neighbourhood—for many, their first contact with theatre. This wonderful initiative, which has endured for over sixty years, hasn’t aged a bit. On the contrary.

Prix des libraires du Québec

May 13, 2013

1676, rue Ontario Est

These prestigious, highly coveted literary awards play a major role in raising public awareness of literature and in promoting reading and culture. The event also publicizes the role of the bookseller, which is to advise and stimulate readers, arousing their curiosity, enhancing their knowledge and culture, and encouraging them to visit their local bookstores. The Prix Adultes section is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2013. The ceremonies will be held at the Lion d’or on May 13.
