Initiatives for Emerging Artists

Emerging artists are worth fighting for—because the future belongs to them! Integrating the new generation of artists into Montreal’s artistic life is an important part of the Conseil’s action plan.

Many of the Conseil’s initiatives regarding emerging artists are outlined in the Outiller la relève artistique montréalaise (ORAM) project, launched by the Forum jeunesse de l’île de Montréal in collaboration with the Conférence régionale des élus de Montréal. ORAM was formed in 2005 to allow young artists easier access to information, training opportunities and financial support.

Among the achievements of ORAM is Artère.qc.ca, a website and newsletter specially designed for Montreal’s emerging artists. In addition to collating all the practical information necessary for young artists, the site helps to promote and disseminate their works. Artère has over 40,000 hits per year. So don’t hesitate to use it!

Through a variety of activities and initiatives, ORAM is also concerned with professional integration and the transmission of knowledge from one generation to the next. The Support for First Work Experiences in Arts-Related Positions program, for example, has a been a huge success with young artists, artisans, cultural workers and organizations alike. Participants gain work experience and new skills in reputable artistic organizations. The retention rate of 100% testifies to the success of the initiative. In addition, the program Soutien aux activités de formation-réseautage d’envergure and the Journées interdisciplinaires de la relève artistique montréalaise are designed to encourage meetings and networking among arts professionals.

Finally, the Prix de la relève – Caisse de la Culture rewards young artists or professional organizations that have helped to advance the cause of emerging artists.

After six years of efforts, actions and investments, emerging artists are now an important part of Montreal’s cultural and artistic scene. As stated in the Bilan 2005-2010 d'ORAM, “… the inclusion of emerging artists is now a key strategy in the cultural development of Montreal.” It is by no means, however, mission accomplished. The Conseil’s efforts to integrate emerging artists continue round the clock!
